Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind, (IFB) is the largest employer of people who are blind in the United States. Currently, 420 employees come to work each day.
IFB produces eyeglasses for VA hospitals throughout the eastern United States and mattresses for military personnel and colleges as well.
In addition they produce low cost high velocity parachutes, advanced combat shirts and T-shirts for our armed forces.
But it is not all about the products they make. IFB changes the lives of those employed by giving individuals with disabilities an opportunity to continue in the work force.
"IFB has made a way for me to continue to be a member of society, a working member of society", says Arthur Saunders. Saunders lost his vision in 2000 due to Glaucoma.
The Winston-Salem based company does not just employ those that live in Forsyth county, many employees come from all parts of the triad like Guilford county, Davidson county, and Wilkes county.
