Trinity, NC -- A local high school is making sure no one forgets a Piedmont soldier who died serving his country in Afghanistan.

Army Specialist Jake Carroll died Nov. 13, 2010. He went to Trinity High School, and Thursday school leaders, friends and family were there for the unveiling of a special memorial statue in his honor.

Carroll's mother said she hopes she never has to go to another ceremony like this one.

"I hope Jake's name is the only name that's ever on this monument. That no other soldier that has attended this high school's family has to go through what we've been through," said Cole Measear. "But at the same time, what an honor it is that Jake did something so honorable and the community is taking notice of it. We appreciate it."

After Carroll's body was brought back his home town, from Afghanistan, his family set up a memorial fund in his name at First Citizens Bank. The money will go to help Carroll's fellow soldiers serving in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan.
