Guilford County, N.C. - McNair Elementary School was not ready in time for the first day of school this year. Now, construction workers aim to finish their work by Halloween.

News 2 has received questions and concerns from parents and students wondering if the work is still on schedule. So, we visited the school on Thursday to get an update.

"Our goal is to ensure we have a safe school, a well constructed school and something we can all be proud of," Facilities and Construction Manager Robert Melton said. "The project is well over 90 percent complete. We have some things we need to complete. Parts of it can be done very quickly."

If you walk through the halls and peek inside rooms, it doesn't look like the school will be ready for students anytime soon.

The district construction manager says the old cliché is true -- looks can be deceiving.

"With the appropriate staff and crew, you can have a room complete and ready online in less than one day. Several crews can do several in one day," Melton said.

Issues with contractors and subcontractors caused some delays at the building. The construction manager says the district is working to make sure everything stays on schedule.

"If people are not being paid or feel they are not being paid in a timely manner, it could possibly impact productivity. But, we are trying to encourage them and make sure they have the current information so they can express their concerns to the appropriate people," Melton said.

Right now, the district says it's basically a matter of putting on finishing touches and doing some cleaning before the doors are ready to open.

Again, construction workers have said they'll be done by Halloween. However, the district still has not set a "move-in" date for students and teachers.
