KING, N.C. -- The poinsettia is the unofficial Christmas plant and Mitchell's Nursery and Greenhouse in King has dozens of varieties.
Judy and Jim Mitchell started growing poinsettias in 1993 with only 3 varieties. Today, the nursery in Stokes County offers 91 varieties.
"See the sea of color. It just takes your breath away," exclaims Judy Mitchell.
The shades of red seem to be endless. Freedom Red is one of the best sellers. The nursery also sells poinsettias in Sparkling Punch, Cortez Burgundy, Novia, Olympia, Orion and the list goes on. Several of the plants are still in the development phase and don't have a name, yet.
Mitchell's Nursery and Greenhouse now grows more than 8,000 poinsettias a year.
"It's an easy way to decorate. I put a different one in each room," explains Judy Mitchell.
Mitchell's Nursery is only one of two commercial greenhouses in the state to grow new poinsettia varieties. Their new inventions help national breeders decide with poinsettias they will release to the market, next year.
