WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A free panel discussion was held Thursday night to educate and enlighten people on the facts surrounding mental health and gun violence.
The event included Dr. Jeffrey Swanson of Duke University as the keynote speaker who specializes in mental health services and law. Panelists consisted of representatives from Wake Forest School of Medicine, Winston-Salem Police, and CenterPoint Human Services.
Dr. Swanson talked about the current research underway regarding mental health and gun violence. The panelists answered questions from the audience on local treatment resources and provided perspectives from local mental health system and law enforcement.
One in four people are affected by mental illness.
