GREENSBORO, NC -- It's not every day a principal dresses up in a costume for a school day but that was the case Wednesday at Archer Elementary.

The school's principal Sophia Roberts dressed up as "Madeline" from the children's book series. Roberts says she simply wants to inspire her students to pick up a book and read outside the classroom. In fact, she's taking the day to read to students all day. The school's cafeteria is also decorated just for the occasion that celebrates "National Young Readers Week."

Students with Guilford County Schools are encouraged to take part in a program called "Roadmap 2 Reading" where they're encouraged to read 20 minutes outside of class.

WFMY News 2 is also teaming up with Guilford County Schools for the "Read 2 Succeed" challenge. It encourages students to reach a goal of reading 3 million books by the end of the year. Every week the WFMY News 2 Good Morning Show team visits a schools to get kids pumped up about diving into an adventure in a book.
