UNCG's First K-9 Retires

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- University of North Carolina-Greensboro's first K-9, Aja retired on Thursday.

Aja's retirement comes at the same time as her handler's retirement. Sergeant David Combs also retired Thursday.

According to the UNCG Police Facebook page, Aja is a female German Shepherd Dog. She was obtained by the UNCG Police on May 10, 2007. After her training, she hit the streets with Sergeant Combs in August 2007.


During her career, Aja had 317 deployments.

  • 271 were for the UNCG Police
  • 40 were for the Greensboro Police
  • The remaining were for the Guilford County Sheriff's Office, A&T State University Police, NC ALE, NC Highway Patrol, and High Point Police.

UNCG Police said, "Because of Aja's searching abilities, police seized nearly 6 lbs. of marijuana, 30 grams of crack cocaine, various amounts of other narcotics, $31,945 in cash, 46 items of drug paraphernalia, 5 guns, and 1 car. Aja also made 7 criminal apprehensions after tracking suspects."


Aja was replaced by K-9 Tink. Tink joins Jax and Stormy as the current UNCG Police K-9 squad.
