WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The rain didn't stop a special celebration in Winston-Salem today.
PRIDE Winston-Salem hosted a gay pride festival and parade downtown. Hundreds of people piled onto the sidewalks of Fourth Street to see groups from across the Triad celebrate.
After the parade, people enjoyed a day-long street festival with food, music and games.
Organizers say events like this one are necessary.
"It gives everyone an opportunity to come out in a public setting to realize that they are not alone," said Keith Hicks, president of PRIDE Winston-Salem. "That we are part of the community, we've always been part of this community, and this is a celebration of our diversity and our culture."
This was PRIDE Winston-Salem's first time hosting the event.
