PINE KNOLL SHORES, NC - Vultures get a bad rap, but weekend programs at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores are designed to improve their image.

Although vultures are maligned because they eat carrion, aquarium officials say that by doing so they help prevent the spread of disease. Vultures face dangers such as being killed as pests and poisoning by drugs used in livestock.

On Saturday and Sunday, the aquarium is holding programs allowing visitors to see vultures up close and kids to make a craft vulture to take home.

The museum is also showing a film featuring black and turkey vultures as well as other native raptors.
