Greensboro, NC -- Phillips Foundation awarded the YMCA of Greensboro a $750,000 grant for the construction of the new Hayes-Taylor YMCA at Barber Park.
The gift means the YMCA only has to raise $1.4 million of the $11.1 million goal set in 2012 to break ground on the new building this year, the YMCA of Greensboro announced.
"Phillips Foundation is glad to contribute the funds for a Children's Learning Center at the new Hayes-Taylor YMCA," said Elizabeth Phillips, executive director of Phillips Foundation, in a news release. "This project is important to southeast Greensboro, and we hope our grant can provide momentum to complete the campaign goals."
The current Hayes-Taylor building has been in southeast Greensboro, next to NC A&T State University, for 75 years. The YMCA later sold the building to the school for seed money to build the new Y.
The city of Greensboro provided the land at Barber Park to make room for the new Y that will more than double the number of people who it can serve.
