Whiteville, NC -- Boats are usually made of wood or metal, but you won't believe what teams are using to compete in a unique boat race this weekend.
Hundreds of boat builders are gearing up for this year's Whiteville Rotary Club Cardboard Boat Race at Lake Waccamaw.
Boats with all sorts of themes will fill the lake near Wilmington Saturday in a test of speed and buoyancy. Last year's boats were shaped like Noah's ark, alligators and even an outhouse.
Builders were given the tricky task of building boats out of duct tape and cardboard. Yes, cardboard!
We met up with last year's champs, who live in Clemmons. Mike Daniel, Wes Crump and John Price say they're ready for another challenge after finishing with the fastest time and the most popular boat.
The team's dragon-themed boat took about 15 hours to build. And these guys hope their hard work pays off at the race.
