Greensboro, NC - Gun accidents involving children happen. From 1999-2010 nearly 800 children under 14-years-old were killed in gun accidents, according to a report from USA Today.

These accidents happen here, in the Triad. A 2-year-old boy from Asheboro found a gun in his parents' room Saturday and accidentally shot himself in his mouth. The sheriff's office says he is in stable condition at the hospital and is expected to have surgeries later this week.

WFMY News 2 contacted the Greensboro Police Department and asked them what gun safety practices they recommend to gun owners to keep kids safe.

Here is their report:

Preventing children from handling guns

In North Carolina, the law requires that if you live with children under 18 and possess a gun, you cannot leave the firearm
1. in a condition where it can be discharged and
2. in a place where the children can access it

This can happen to any gun owner.  There are regular news stories about children accessing guns and shooting themselves or others, and once is too much.

Some options for securing firearms are:
Cable locks
lock boxes
safes

This can be difficult if you want to have the gun immediately available at night, but it has to be done.

Teach your children about what to do when they see a gun.

A good time to talk is when they show interest in guns, even toy ones.

Children see guns used in cartoons and television shows.  It is important to stress that real guns can hurt and kill.

If children find a gun, they should
Stop
Do not touch the gun at all
Leave the area
Tell an adult

Take note that in addition to guns in your house, children can find guns at the houses of friends and family.  When your child visits them, ask if they have guns, and if they are secured.

If you have particularly curious and creative children, you may want to store guns away from the house.
