Greensboro, NC -- Students are breathless at Archer Elementary School in Greensboro from all their walking and research, but they're okay with it.

For them, it's exercise and a lesson in service. During a discussion after the Boston Marathon bombing, these fourth graders wanted to know "what happened to the runners who weren't allowed to finish?"

With that question, a service learning project was born: 'Operation: Finish The Race'.

Their inquisitive minds, along with the help of their teacher Chris Terzigni, students went right to work trying to find a way to answer that question and to finish the race for those runners.

Archer Elementary students started collecting data, charting, and measuring their walking distances. Together they set a goal of 6,295 miles.

Their project has become contagious, because other elementary schools have joined the effort. Students who walk keep track of their distance.

They enter the information on their interactive website. The site can be accessed by the public and sponsors are welcomed. Money collected will go to One Boston Fund.
