Winston-Salem, NC -- A Triad student who hasn't graduated from college yet is getting the highest recognition reserved for young Americans.

Madison Thomas is a junior at Salem College. She just learned she will receive the Congressional Gold Medal - Congress' highest award for young Americans.

A news release from the school stated Thomas was selected after completing more than 400 volunteer hours and planning and implementing a five-day tour of towns in North and South Carolina to research how the outsourcing of textile jobs has affected local economies.

Thomas will officially get her medal when she attends the ceremony in June on Capitol Hill.

Participants in this program earn Bronze, Silver and Gold medals by setting and achieving goals in four program areas: Personal Development, Physical Fitness, Volunteer Public Service and Expedition/Exploration.
