WASHINGTON -- Two eighth graders from a Chapel Hill Middle School are celebrating after taking home the national Scrabble title Saturday.
Kevin Boweman and Raymond Gao, from Smith Middle School, defeated 88 other teams to win the 2013 National School Scrabble Championship.
Boweman and Gao finished with a 6-1 record and a +717 point spread.
They won with words, such as YUAN (a monetary unit in China), PAEON (a metrical foot of four syllables) and KUDU (a large antelope).
This was the 11th year of the event that attracts young Scrabble experts from the U.S. and Canada.
