Kernersville, NC -- March madness is in the air, but at one Triad elementary school, it's more about the different colleges and universities than the basketball.

Ms. Melder's class of 5th graders at Sedge Garden Elementary School in Kernersville is using the NCAA brackets to learn about higher education.

Each student gets a different school to learn about.  They have to research things like how far away it is from the Triad, how many students go there, and how the average temperatures compare to Kernersville.

"The whole purpose is to get these kids to start connecting to the year 2020, when they graduate from high school. So that they can start thinking beyond high school and start thinking about their careers and their own futures," Sara Melder, 5th Grade Math & Science Teacher.

Ms. Melder said the children really like to get on the computers and research the different schools and the little competition that goes along with it.
