Oak Ridge, NC -- Students, parents and community members from Northwest Guilford High School came together to support one of their own in a charity run/walk Saturday.
Teacher Ray Parrish was diagnosed with astrocytoma, a brain tumor, in Dec. 2012. He taught at the school for 20 years and is a NWHS graduate.
When students found out about his condition, they stepped up to help.
Along with parents and other members of the Viking community, students hosted Ray's Run 5K and 1-Mile Run/Walk at Oak Ridge Town Park.
Marianne Wiener, 2013 race director, says 1,150 runners and walkers showed up for the race.
"It was an awesome day," she said.
Overall the event raised about $30,000 and Ray, himself, fired the gun to kick off the race Saturday morning.
