Thurman Haynes turns 96-years-old. Guilford County Schools said he is the oldest volunteer in the county.
Jamestown, NC -- Thurman Haynes is a volunteer at Meredith Leigh Haynes Bennie Inman Education Center. On Saturday, he turns 96 years old.
Haynes told News 2's Tony Smith, he's lived through two World Wars and that volunteering is what's keeping him going.
"I really don't feel like I am old," said Haynes, volunteer at Haynes-Inman Education Center.
According to Guilford County Schools officials, he's the oldest school volunteer in the county.
"I've got to keep going and that keeps me going. you can't retire and sit and just enjoy life. You've got to stay active."
He has been helping out everyday at the school, for the last three years. Meredith Leigh Haynes Bennie Inman Education Center is special to Haynes because the school is named after his granddaughter.
"He has done so much for us, this is a way for the community to give back to him," said Vicki Simmons, Haynes co-worker.
Haynes no longer has grand-children, his grand-daughter died back in the 1980s.
"I adopted them, as my grandchildren," said Haynes.
Which is why everyone wanted to take part in his birthday party at the school in Jamestown.
On Friday, students and staff celebrated his service to the school and his birthday. There was cake, punch and staff danced in honor of the man they call "Thurmy."
Haynes said, he didn't have any big plans for this birthday. But the staff members at the school are taking him out to dinner on Friday night.
