Greensboro -- In an effort to get the GMS crew out in the garden, they've each been offered their own personalized garden.  Jackie Fernandez loves corn... and wants to grow her very own.

According to Kenny Byrd from Cardinal Lawn and Garden, corn is a fairly easy crop to grow.  The main thing it needs is space.  There are two reasons for that.  Corn needs wind pollination and it's a heavy feeder.

To make sure it can be wind pollinated, Byrd suggests planting at least three rows about three feet apart.  That way the wind can easily transport the pollen to all the plants.  To prevent competition for food from the soil, each kernel in each row should be planted about a foot apart.

Each stalk produces about two ears of corn.  After that, it's done for that stalk.  If you want corn all summer, stagger your planting a few weeks.

Jackie has good intentions... but she also has a condo.  It doesn't look like her own corn crop is going to happen this summer.  Here's her consolation prize.  It's timelapse YouTube video of corn growing... and a recipe to season the great corn she can get locally.  Here's a list of local farms and farmers markets.  It's Got to be NC!

Dried Herb Blend (for corn and other vegetables)

4 tablespoons paprika
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon thyme

Combine all ingredients and pour into a shaker. Use on any vegetable instead of salt.
