Everything seems to be going up these days. You can pay between $1.50 and $2.00 for a head of iceberg lettuce and up to $5.00 or more for a mix like arugula, spinach and radicchio.
OR, you could plant it all yourself and save a lot of money!
This is the season for planting lettuce. According to Cissie Apple from A&A Plants, it's a cool season crop so you can plant it from now until about mid April and it will produce until it starts getting really warm.
There are many reasons to try it.
- Lettuce is good for you. The darker the color, the more nutrients it holds.
- You could buy organic produce- or you could grow your own. You never have to question what has been used if you're the one who has been tending the crop.
- Its more fun and rewarding to eat something you invested time and effort in.
