Study: Banking Is Costing Americans More Money

A recent survey says consumers are facing more charges for checking services when it comes to banking.

The survey, from, says Americans are paying more to use their own money.

Researchers found ATM surcharges for a bank's non-customers rose 4 percent last year. The average overdraft fee is up 1.4 percent, and the average monthly fee for a checking account is up 25 percent.

The percentage of free checking accounts also shrank to 39 percent. It was at 76 percent in 2009.
