Burlington, NC -- Police arrested a Burlington man Wednesday for stabbing a man who officers later determined was deaf and mute.

Officers arrested Robert Jarell Neal early Thursday in Elon.  He's been charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury and Felonious Assault on a Handicapped Person.

Police say Neal stabbed the victim before 5 p.m Wednesday. The victim had been walking and using sign language with another person, who was also deaf, before the stabbing.

EMS transported the victim to Alamance Regional Hospital before he was later transferred to UNC Hospitals for treatment of his injuries.

Witnesses told police the stabbing happened when Neal, , mistook the sign language for gang signs, but Assistant Chief Chris Verdeck said right now, those claims are speculative.

Investigators will interview the victim at the hospital tomorrow.

Neal is being held in the Alamance County Detention Facility under a $500,000 secured bond.
