Winston-Salem, NC-- Police in Winston Salem are looking for a driver who hit a child getting on a school bus this morning.

Theo Helm with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools said the girl was hit just before 8 a.m. Monday while she was boarding the bus for Gibson Elementary School. Helm said the child is a second grader at the school.

Police said the driver who hit the child didn't stop. The case is now listed as a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian.

"What type of individual really he thinks he is, to hit someone, knowingly that he hit a young child and leave the scene and disregard any damage he could have done to that person and go on like nothing ever happened?" asked Kerry Smith, the father of the child injured.

Smith says his older daughter was walking his 7-year-old to the bus stop across the street from his house on North Cherry Street.

"She came back this time, she was very frantic and panicking, just crying out of control saying that Kelly got hit so I was thinking she was laying up in the streets, so when I looked out the door, I was like where is she then? And she indicated she's on the bus," explained Smith.

Smith says before he could go check on his daughter, the bus was already gone. Smith says he driver took Kelly on the rest of his stops and then dropped her off at school.

"I talked to her teacher and she said she actually sent her to the nurse because she came in class and the bus driver evidentially didn't report anything," explained Smith.

The school bus did have its stop arm extended and its lights were flashing, according to police.

Police and school officials said the child sustained minor injuries to the face and neck area.

Winston-Salem Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Unit is in charge of the investigation.
