Michael D. Miller Convicted In 1990 Rape, Murder Of 74 Year-Old Thressa Nicholson In Winston Salem

Winston Salem, NC-- Police in Winston Salem announced today a conviction in a cold case murder from 1990.

Detectives said on August 4, 1990, they went to a house on Lakeview Boulevard in Winston Salem and found 74 year-old Thressa Nicholson dead inside. An autopsy revealed that Nicholson died as a result of strangulation.

The investigation turned up no suspects or arrests for years and was later adopted by the Winston-Salem Police Department's Cold Case Unit.

Those investigators had DNA samples seized as evidence in 1990 tested. Those samples along with additional investigative information, led to the arrest of Michael Dwayne Miller on August 13, 2009. Miller was charged with First Degree Murder and First Degree Rape.

Police were able to find him right away, because Miller was in a North Carolina prison for unrelated charges.

Tuesday, December 18, 2012 Michael Dwayne Miller stood before a judge and pled guilty to Second Degree Murder and Second Degree Rape of Thressa Nicholson.

He was sentenced to 30 years in prison and has to register as a sex offender.
