RALEIGH -- A Raleigh police officer and a suspect were both injured following a fatal shooting in North Raleigh Friday.

Police spokesman Jim Sughrue said officers found the body of Jay Simmons, 53, when they were called to an auto parts store Friday afternoon. He was shot and killed while in his pickup truck, Sughrue said.

Police say they found the suspect, Matthew Calton, around 9:30 p.m. near a shopping center.

When found, the 53-year-old suspect fired a shotgun at two officers, hitting one in the arm. Both officers returned fire, and a shot hit Calton in the torso.

The officer and the suspect were taken to WakeMed for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Sughrue says Calton will be arrested for Simmons' murder when his medical condition improves.
