Winston-Salem, NC-- Police in Winston-Salem are investigating a shooting on University Parkway that left one man dead.
Police said that around 12:45 pm Dallas Antwan Conner walked into Kevin Powell MotorSports on University Parkway with an pistol grip shot gun. Conner demanded keys to a motorcycle.
According to Assistant Chief Barry Rountree, Detective Poe, an on duty, plain clothes officer was in Kevin Powell Motorsports at the time and was told by a customer that someone may have been trying to rob the business.
Assistant Chief Rountree said that Detective Poe saw a man with gloves carrying a long weapon, and there was a "challenge."
Shots were fired, but WSPD has not specified how many shots were fired or if the shooter was targeting the officer. The officer was not injured.
EMS and Fire personnel responded and pronounced Conner dead at the scene.
The NC State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation, which is standar practice. WSPD is investigating the attempted robbery and the Professional Standards division is conducting an administrative investigation.

"I am shocked and saddened to hear of the unfortunate incident that occurred at my Winston-Salem location earlier today.
First and foremost, I am so very thankful that none of our employees or customers were harmed or injured in what was an apparent attempted robbery. I especially want to commend our employees in the store who kept a level head in such a stressful situation.
I want to express my sincere appreciation to the Winston-Salem Police officer whose quick actions and bravery undoubtedly saved lives. I look forward to meeting him personally to shake his hand and thank him for his heroism. My thoughts and prayers are also with the victim's family as they wrestle with what happened today.
Given today's tragic events, our Winston-Salem store will be closed on Saturday, August 18; it will reopen on Tuesday, August 21 as usual at 9 a.m.
