Winston-Salem, NC-- Police in Winston-Salem are investigating a shooting on University Parkway that left one man dead.

Police said that around 12:45 pm Dallas Antwan Conner walked into Kevin Powell MotorSports on University Parkway with an pistol grip shot gun. Conner demanded keys to a motorcycle.

According to Assistant Chief Barry Rountree, Detective Poe, an on duty, plain clothes officer was in Kevin Powell Motorsports at the time and was told by a customer that someone may have been trying to rob the business.

Assistant Chief Rountree said that Detective Poe saw a man with gloves carrying a long weapon, and there was a "challenge."

Shots were fired, but WSPD has not specified how many shots were fired or if the shooter was targeting the officer. The officer was not injured.

EMS and Fire personnel responded and pronounced Conner dead at the scene.

The NC State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation, which is standar practice. WSPD is investigating the attempted robbery and the Professional Standards division is conducting an administrative investigation.
