GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Prosecutors say a former corrections officer at the Butner Federal Correctional Complex has been sentenced for smuggling contraband.
Thirty-nine-year-old Clyon Hinnant of Raleigh pleaded guilty to accepting bribes and conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud. Hinnant was sentenced to four years in prison, followed by three years of supervised probation.
U.S. Attorney Thomas Walker says Trina Richardson pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit bribery and wire fraud and has been placed on probation for two years.
Prosecutors say between January and October of last year, a Butner inmate directed other inmates to send money to co-conspirators in North Carolina and Virginia. Prosecutors say those people delivered the money to Richardson, who turned it over to Hinnant. They say he then smuggled cigarettes and marijuana into the prison.
