Former WSFCS Math Teacher Mark Mercer Pleads Guilty To Statutory Sex Offenses Case

Winston-Salem, NC-- A case involving a teacher charged with having sex with students more than a year ago, finally came to an end in a Forsyth County Courtroom.

Wednesday, Mark Tobin Mercer, a former Math Teacher and soccer coach for Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools pleaded guilty to Statutory Sex Offenses.

The case involved more than one student. 

In January 2011, Mercer was charged with 29 Felony counts of Sex Offenses involving minors. Those charges included: Statutory Rape, Indecent Liberties with a Minor and Sexual Activity with a Student.

According to Forsyth County's District Attorney Jim O'Neill, as part of the plea deal Mercer only had to plead guilty to two counts of Statutory Sex Offenses.

O'Neill told WFMY News 2 that the judge sentenced Mercer to 26 and a half years in Prison.

Mercer was teaching Math at Jefferson Elementary when he was charged. He was also a Volleyball coach for Jefferson Middle and a JV boys and girls Soccer coach at Mt. Tabor High School.
