House Speaker John Boehner reportedly uttered an expletive to describe Rep. Steve King, an Iowa Republican known for his controversial statements about undocumented immigrants.

In a first-person article for Texas Monthly, Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro recounted how Boehner said last summer, "What an a------" about King after Castro and another Democrat thanked the speaker for publicly admonishing the Iowa congressman.

King had likened young immigrants who come to the USA illegally to drug traffickers, saying they have "calves the size of cantaloupes." Boehner then made clear at his weekly briefing with Capitol Hill reporters that King's comments were "deeply offensive and wrong" and that there is no place in the debate about overhauling immigration laws for "hateful or ignorant comments from elected officials."

Castro's article is aimed at giving Texas Monthly readers a "behind-the-scenes" look at his first year in Congress. In telling the anecdote about Boehner's description of King, Castro was complimentary about the Ohio Republican and the tough job he has leading the House.

"The Democratic caricature of the speaker is that he's an overly tan, overly emotional cat-herder who has lost control of his flock," Castro wrote. "But in person, he comes across as approachable and down-to-earth, and you can see how he earned the trust of his colleagues and became their leader."

Boehner's office had no comment about Castro's article and the quote attributed to the speaker.
