Greensboro, NC - Chances are you know someone who is impacted by breast cancer or maybe it's you who's already fighting. All month, people just like you will take a stand against breast cancer. And it's not just women who are getting involved in the fight. Fathers, husbands and brothers are too.
Coley Hooker watched his wife, Johnnie Mae battle the disease for years before her death in June 2008. By October that same year, Hooker and his closest friends came up with the idea to host a bowl-a-thon in his wife's honor. "We chose October because it's National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and she was born in October," explained Hooker.
Since it started, the event has raised and donated $14,115.50 to the Cone Health Cancer Center Patient Support Fund. Last year the group raised over $6,000 and the goal for this week's event is $10,000.
"The money goes to patients and families who need financial assistance," explained Hooker. "People can get wigs or maybe even transportation to their medical appointments."
You can help too! The Johnnie Mae Hooker Strike Out Cancer Bowl-A-Thon is Saturday, October 20th. Competition begins at 1pm. Teams of four will compete for prizes and have fun as they raise funds. Pledge sheets are available at Triad Lanes, 21 Oak Branch Court in Greensboro or by calling 336-674-1882.
