Greensboro, NC - Chances are you know someone who's been impacted by breast cancer. It might even be you.
Now's your chance to fight against it. You can walk with thousands of women on Saturday, October 6th at the Women's Only 5K Walk & Run.
WFMY News 2's Tracey McCain spoke with Wendy Burns, a three-year breast cancer survivor Tuesday on the Good Morning Show about this year's walk.
"The best thing about the race is that all the money collected benefits the mammography program which provides free mammograms to women who can't afford them or are under insured," said Burns. "All that money goes to help women right here in our community."
Burns owns the Jazzercise Greensboro Fitness Center which has helped race-goers warm up on race day for the past decade. But three years ago, Wendy found herself there not just as a business owner, but as a survivor.
"We started out just wanting to do the lumpectomy but they couldn't clear the margins and then you have that choice in front of you of what to do. As a woman it's hard."
Today she is 100% cancer free and thriving! But there are women out there who need your help.
Last year alone, the Women's Only 5K Walk & Run raised more than $100,000 for the Mammography Scholarship Fund, which provides free, life-saving mammograms and follow-up care for women who are uninsured or lack the financial means to pay for the screening.
You can help this year by registering for the race right now. Head to http://www.womensonlyrun.com/ for more information.
