GREENSBORO, NC -- "Hello, my name is Janaya and my question was how far is the Milky May Galaxy from earth."
Roger Joyner from the Greensboro Science Center explains that is almost a trick question.
"How far away is the Milky Way Galaxy from the earth, well the kind of silly correct answer would be zero, we actually live in the Milky Way Galaxy so its apart of where we live. "
If you have ever gone outside and looked up and seen a great sort of cloudy looking band running across the sky. Take a look at the attached video, Roger has a picture of it.
"We live inside of it and so were actually in the Milky Way Galaxy. The earth happens to be about 27 thousand light years from the center of the Galaxy so we're out here somewhere on the edge on one of these spiral arms. So one answer would be its 27 thousand light years away to the center of the Galaxy but were actually in the Galaxy."
