The nation's largest retailer isn't waiting for changes in safety standards for gas cans.
This is a follow up story 2WTK did in mid December. Several different burn victims sued gas can manufacturers.
Their lawsuits claimed a flaw in the design of the cans caused the explosion. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is calling on gas can manufacturers to add a small piece of wire mesh called flame arrestors to the cans.
They say that'll keep the gases from going back into the gas can which could cause the explosion. After hearing some of the debate WalMart is stepping up.
The company sells more plastic gas cans than any one other distributor so they're contributing more than $25 million to a $161 million lawsuit settlement.
But this doesn't mean they're acknowledging fault or liability in any explosions.
