Undated -- When it comes to returns, researchers at Cornell University say anywhere from 10% to 15% of holiday sales are taken back.

Whether you're the buyer or the "taker-backer", you want the experience to be a good one. Even the most lenient take back policies have limits.

MoneyTalksNews.com found these sticking points that are worth noting:

Macy's.

If you have a gift receipt, you get the full purchase price on Macy's gift card.
If you don't have a receipt, you still get a credit but it is for the lowest selling price of the last 180 days.

Costco.

You can get a full refund on anything.
But electronics, like TVs, computers, MP3 players and cell phones must be returned within 90 days.

Target.

Items bought between November 1st and December 25th are subject to a 30-day return period.

That return period starts December 26th! Which means you have to return items by January 24th.
