HENRY COUNTY, VA -- There's a new scheme making the rounds, and the target is really anyone who owns property or a home.
The Henry County Sheriff's office says several people in their area have gotten something called a "Deed Processing Notice" in the mail. The company called "Record Transfer Services" sends the document. It has an address of 1000 N West Suite 1200 Wilmington, Delaware 19801 with telephone number (888)874-4669. This document also states its service is not associated with any government agency and has not been approved or endorsed by any government agency. It looks official, and the letter claims the company needs a current copy of your Grant Deed and property profile.
DEED PROCESSING NOTICE EXAMPLE
You're supposed to send in the paperwork and $83 and you'll get the copy of the deed back in 21 days.
Here's the thing. If you go to the Henry County Clerk of Court's office, you can get a copy of your deed for 50 cents! It's only two dollars more to have the deed certified.
The sheriff's department says while the letters are unethical, they're not illegal UNLESS the company never sends you your deed.
But you're better off keeping your money and throwing the letter in the trash.
