Greensboro, NC --When it comes to making energy saving upgrades to your home, there's the big three: air and draft sealing, ductwork sealing, and insulation of ducts and the attic and crawl space.

Those things alone can save you 15% to 20% on your utility bills. But the actual work happens in the corner of your attic or in your crawl space.

Derrick Giles with Enpulse Energy brought the attic to us so we could see what types of fixes companies do.

One of the first examples is adding insulation attached to the knee wall, or  the short wall a lot of us have in upstairs or attic spaces. That keeps the hot attic air from seeping into the cooled space of the room on the other side. And this is done properly because you can see what looks like caulk but it's foam insulation that's been squirted around the edges sealing that so air can't get in around the edges.

Giles showed the typical air/heat vent in your floor or ceiling. While you expect air to come out of the vent, Giles says air seeps out from the "boot" the vent is attached to. Companies use foam to seal the crevices. Other examples included duct work an electrical outlets.

The City of Greensboro has sponsored a home energy upgrade program for about the last year and half. They've pre-approved assessors to be part it. We're linking you to their list.
