High Point, NC -- One box could help keep the environment clean, contaminates out of your drinking water, and most importantly: save a life.

That box is a medicine drop box. It's in the lobby of the High Point Police Department at 1009 Leonard Avenue, and it's open 24 hours a day.

Proper and safe disposal of prescription medication. The state Division of Public Health says prescription and over-the-counter medications cause more than three-fourths of all unintentional poisonings in North Carolina. They also say approximately 1,000 people died in North Carolina last year from overdosing on prescription drugs. They also say prescription drugs are now the second most abused drug, among people ages 12-17, second only to marijuana.

The box at the High Point Police Department  works like a mail slot. You don't have to wait to keep yourself safe. You can drop your pills off any time. Once the pills go in, they can't get back out.

Every week, people drop off leftover prescriptions, expired medicines, and even stuff they could get in trouble for -- no questions asked.

High Point Police Captain Mike Kirk said, "Nothing is logged into evidence. The vice unit takes control and logs in by weight, then it is taken to incinerator and its destroyed. We don't log the names, we don't check the names."

The box has been in the High Point Police Department lobby since January 2012. Since that time, people have turned in more than 200 pounds of medicines.

Kirk said, "A lot of people don't want to put it in the garbage or leave it around for someone to pick it up and this is a safe way."
