Greensboro, NC --  How hard is it turn on the dishwasher? Not at all. But if you want it to work more effectively, you'll need to help the machine out.

How you load the dishwasher and what you use as detergent makes all the difference. Consumer Reports tested detergents and loading strategies.

Let's give you the loading highlights:

*Load large items at the side and back. Otherwise they'll block water and detergent.

*Don't nest or rest dishes against each other or water won't reach all surfaces.

*Load forks and spoons with handles down, but place knives handles up.

*Make sure you mix up your flatware if your dishwasher has an open basket. You want to prevent the like pieces from sticking together.

You've done your part, now it's time for the detergent to do it's part. In recent tests, Consumer Reports found:

1- Cascade Complete With Dawn Actionpacs: excellent at resisting mineral buildup while getting dishes and pots clean

2- Cascade Complete All In 1 Powder: excellent in resisting water spots, cleaning dishes and resisting film/discoloration and very good at resisting food deposits

3- Great Value Powder Pacs(WalMart). CR "Best Buy". Best combination of performance and price. Excellent at resisting film/discoloration and water spots and also very good at cleaning dishes and resisting food deposits
