CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Panthers announced they've re-signed backup defensive end Antwan Applewhite to a one-year contract.

The 6-foot-3, 258-pound Applewhite played in 12 games with one start for Carolina in 2011 after being signed in October. Applewhite produced 21 tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble.

Applewhite spent his first four NFL seasons (2007-10) with the San Diego Chargers after being signed by the team as an undrafted rookie free agent out of San Diego State. Three of those seasons he worked under former Chargers defensive coordinator and current Panthers coach Ron Rivera.

Applewhite, who can play defensive end in a 4-3 defense or outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, brings versatility to Carolina's defense. He has 88 career tackles along with 5.5 sacks and forced three fumbles.
