Florham Park, NJ (Sports Network) - The New York Jets signed veteran kicker
Billy Cundiff and released kicker Brett Maher on Tuesday.
Cundiff, who has played in nine NFL seasons with five teams, is expected to
compete with Nick Folk for the starting job.
Cundiff played in the first five games with the Washington Redskins last year,
hitting 7-of-12 field goal attempts before being cut.
He is most famous for missing a potential game-tying, 32-yard field goal with
15 seconds left in Baltimore's 23-20 loss to the New England Patriots in
the AFC Championship Game two years ago.
In 106 games with Dallas, New Orleans, Cleveland, Baltimore and Washington,
Cundiff has hit 139-of-184 field goal attempts and 217-of-218 extra-point
In other team news, the Jets signed free agent long snapper Pat Scales and
tackle Jeffrey Shugarts and released wide receiver Thomas Mayo and tackle
Mark Popek Tuesday.
