Cornelius, NC (Sports Network) - Michael Waltrip Racing revealed on Tuesday
that Martin Truex Jr. suffered a scaphoid fracture and sprain of his right
wrist during an accident in last Saturday's race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
According to a release from MWR, Truex had an MRI on Monday. Doctors have
fitted him with a special cast that he will wear indefinitely. The cast will
enable him to better grip the steering wheel. NASCAR has cleared Truex to
compete in this weekend's race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
MWR said it has yet to determine if a stand-by driver is needed for Truex at
Truex was involved in a multi-car crash in the late-stages of the 500-lap race
at Bristol. His No. 56 Toyota slammed into the outside wall. Truex was treated
at the track's infield medical care center. He finished 35th.
With two races to go before the start of the Chase for the Sprint Cup
championship, Truex sits 14th in the point standings. He holds the first of
two wild card spots due to his one win this season, which came two months ago
in Sonoma, Calif.
