GREENSBORO - Senior Lamont Middleton scored 22 points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out five assists as the Aggies escaped a scare from Division II Fayetteville State with a 71-65 win Monday night at Corbett Sports Center.
Middleton was joined in double figures by senior Richaud Pack's 14 and sophomore Bruce Beckford's 13.
A&T trailed by eight at the half, 41-33, and by as many as 11 in the second half. But a Middleton completed a 12-0 A&T run and gave the Aggies a 57-56 lead with 6:07 to play.
Pack gave A&T its biggest lead at 66-61 with an open 3-pointer from the corner with 3:48 to play. Fayetteville State would score the next four points to cut the lead to one, but freshman Michael Briscoe hit two clutch free throws with 38 seconds remaining to give A&T a three-point cushion.
The Aggies play another exhibition game Wednesday night at 7 against Allen University at Corbett before playing their season opener against Greensboro College at Corbett Friday night at 7.
