WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest University football coach Jim Grobe is resigning.

Grobe made the announcement Monday in a news conference.

Grobe said he's unsure what his future is, but he is interested in coaching.

He said he's been thinking about resigning for a while. "It's probably good for the team to have some new energy and new direction."

Grobe added, "The bottom line is you gotta win. You gotta win games."

Ron Wellman, athletic director, said Grobe was a great coach, but he is a better man.

Wellman and Grobe told the team about the news before the 4:15 p.m. news conference.

Wake Forest University football player, Michael Campanaro, tweeted "Wow. Coach Grobe Steppin Down!!" Another player, AJ Marshall, tweeted "Thank you for everything @WF_Grobie I'm greatly appreciative to have fought for you for these past 4 years.. Love you coach.."

Grobe's overall record at WFU is 77-81; the team was 4-8 in 2013. He is tied with "Peahead" Walker, who coached from 1937-1950, for the most wins in school history.

Grobe led the team to four bowl games and a 2006 ACC Championship. During the 90s, WFU football only won 38 games.
