HILLSBOROUGH, N.C.  - The prosecutor involved in an investigation into whether sports agents broke state law by providing gifts to former Tar Heels football players says authorities will decide on "potential charges" by early October.

Jim Woodall, district attorney for Orange County, said Friday he'll meet with North Carolina Secretary of State's office representatives. The decision on whether to file charges, possibly against more than one person, could come "by the end of this month or the first week ... in October."

Search warrants have focused on Terry Watson of the Georgia-based Watson Sports Agency. Ex-UNC players Greg Little and Marvin Austin told investigators Watson provided cash and other benefits.

The law requires agents to register with the Secretary of State's office and prohibits offering gifts to entice athletes to sign representation contracts.
