ELON, N.C. -- The 2013 football season officially got underway for the Elon Phoenix on Monday, August 5, as the maroon and gold held its first practice of the year.
The Phoenix took to the fields behind the Francis Center a little after 3:30 p.m. full of energy and with a focus on a successful fall.
Here were head coach Jason Swepson's thoughts following the first practice of the campaign:
Swepson on the last couple of days:
"Elon has a nice tradition here. On Sunday, we went to Elon Community Church. I ran in to Dr. Earl Danieley there, and he's the one that started the tradition. He told me this was year 40. The players have an opportunity to meet the church members and then they provide us with a great meal after church. It's a great tradition that I look forward to every year. We've had administrative meetings. Sunday morning we also had the conditioning test and then, this morning, we were able to talk some football."
Swepson on the conditioning test:
"I was really pleased with the results of the conditioning test. We have a new strength coach in Ted Perlak who came in and installed a whole new program in mid-May. We had about 60 guys here the whole summer who made the commitment to be here and improve. About 95 percent of the guys passed the conditioning test on the first day."
Swepson on day one:
"I think everyone was anxious to see how the routine would work out here at the Francis fields. We got out here early and got started a little early. We have a young team. Between the freshman and sophomore classes, I believe we have about 65 players. So they're still learning the routine."
Swepson on the number of players in camp:
"This is the first time in my three years that we finally got to 95 players in camp. My first year, we barely got to 85. Now we've gotten to 95 and we still have 10 more that will join us when school starts. We finally have three teams to practice and are practicing like a normal football team."
Swepson on the freshman class:
"We have some great leaders in that freshman class. I'll start with Asunji Maddox who is a very vocal leader. I think the freshman class is really latching on to. I can go down the line with this class. These kids come from some successful high school programs."
Swepson on position battles in camp:
"Obviously we have a battle at quarterback. Offensive line is a key spot as well. When you say a starting lineup there, it's not just five, it's at least eight. Right now we're trying to find a top eight. We've got about four that we're real solid on now so we're trying to find the next four. That's a key position that has to be solidified."
Swepson on what a casual fan needs to watch:
"You need to watch our tempo on both offense and defense. We're trying to use that tempo to our advantage, especially on offense. We have some great skill and our running backs are veteran now. You can't play that fast if the running backs don't know the running and blocking schemes. That's not going to hold us back this year."
