Elon's Cameron Silverman, Stefan Fortmann Heading To NCAA Tennis Championships

ELON, N.C. - Elon University men's tennis junior Cameron Silverman and sophomore Stefan Fortmann make the trip to Urbana, Ill., this week for the 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships, May 22-27, at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex/Atkins Tennis Center. Silverman will compete in singles action, while he and Fortmann will team for doubles. Draws will be announced Tuesday, May 21.

The 2013 Southern Conference Player of the Year, Silverman led the Phoenix to the league's regular season title this season. Ranked 67th nationally in singles by the ITA, Silverman finished the season 14-8 in singles action, posting a 6-2 mark against league competition. He was named the SoCon Player of the Month in February and was ranked as high as 21st nationally this season.

As a tandem, Silverman and Fortmann finished the year 16-4 in doubles play, going 9-1 against SoCon competition. The duo earned first-team All-SoCon accolades in doubles, ending the year on a three-match winning streak. They currently rank 33rd in the nation.

The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 22-27 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex/Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill., following the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 16-21. The University of Illinois, Champaign will serve as host.

All matches shall be the best of three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games all will be used for all matches.

Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championships is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA Top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA Top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a minimum of 13 completed singles matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.

Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championships is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible doubles teams ranked in the ITA Top 60 for eligible/entered doubles teams. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA Top 60 eligible/entered doubles teams, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All doubles teams must have a minimum of 10 completed doubles matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
