For the second straight year, the Winston-Salem Dash suffered an Opening Day loss to the Carolina Mudcats, falling 10-1 in front of 4,135 at Five County Stadium Friday night. Carolina scored twice in each of the first two innings, then scored five in the third inning off Dash starter Bryan Blough (0-1) to jump out to an early lead that they never relinquished.
The Mudcats (1-0) took the lead in the first frame when Tyler Naquin came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Tony Wolters. With two down in the opening inning, a wild pitch from Blough allowed Francisco Lindor to score, putting the hosts up two after one.
In the second frame, the Dash (0-1) picked up their first run of the season, as Mark Tracy blasted a triple off the center field wall and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mark Haddow.
In the bottom half of the frame, the Mudcats pieced together three hits, with a Dash error mixed in, to again push across two runs. Carolina pulled away in the third with five runs. Naquin delivered the big blow with a three-run homer with two outs.
The eight run lead was plenty for Carolina starter Cody Anderson (1-0) needed. One of the top pitching prospects in the Cleveland Indians' organization, Anderson kept the Dash bats quiet for most of the night, surrendering just the one run on four hits in six innings of work.
After the third, new Dash manager Ryan Newman turned things over to left-hander Jarrett Casey, who was the first man to come out of the Dash bullpen. Casey struck out five Mudcats in three scoreless innings of work. J.R. Ballinger followed Casey and gave up just an eighth-inning tally in two frames of action.
The Dash continue their season-opening series against the Mudcats tomorrow night at 6:15. Chris Bassitt will toe the rubber for the Dash, while Carolina will counter with fellow righty Jacob Lee. Pregame coverage begins at 6:00 on wsdash.com.
