Oops! Grand Theft Auto 5 Shipped Early To UK Customers

"Grand Theft Auto 5" fans in the United Kingdom reportedly got a pleasant surprise on Saturday. It appears from that early copies of the game may have been delivered early to Amazon UK customers, breaking an embargo set by the game's publisher.

According the to BBC, some customers who preordered "GTA 5" began posting on social media that they had gotten an early copy of the game. The open-world, action-adventure game is scheduled to go on sale on Sept. 17. The British news agency says that Rockstar North, the game's developer, is investigating the embargo breach.

In a statement given to GamesIndustry International, Rockstar said: "We are in the process of investigating early 'sales' to determine how and why that is occurring."

Amazon and Rockstar North's parent company, Rockstar Games, did not immediately respond to CBS News' request for comment.

The hype surround the release of "GTA 5" is massive. This is the fifth update to the blockbuster game. Its first official trailer, which was released in June, shows an open and interactive world that is filled with classic "GTA" elements, like cars, cops and criminals, but adds new activities, like golfing, shopping and scuba diving.

The game's predecessor, "GTA 4," has sold 25 million copies. In a 2011 report, the game's distributor Take-Two Interactive said the franchise has sold a total of 114 million copies since its debut.

The "Grand Theft Auto" franchise was first introduced for the PC and PlayStation console in 1997. It went on to become one of the most controversial and iconic video game series of all time. The game will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360. It is rated "M" for Mature by the ESRB.
