The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released their safety rankings for mini, or sub compact, cars. Test results show these cars are the worst performing group of any evaluated.
The main factor is the small overlap test. The test replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or object, like a tree or utility pole. Only one minicar, out of 11 tested, achieved an acceptable rating in that test. That was the Chevrolet Spark.
When it comes to structure, every minicar, including the Spark, rated marginal or poor. All but two vehicles got low marks for restraints and kinematics (allowing too much motion in a crash).
In the end, the Spark took the top rating, while the Honda Fit and the Fiat 500 were worst performers.
