HIGH POINT, N.C. -- The High Point City Council voted 8-0 Monday night to approve the requested closure of Montlieu Avenue through High Point University.

Jeron Hollis, public information officer for the City of High Point, told WFMY News 2 the unanimous decision came from council members believing the closure will be a good move for economic development.

The closure will close the street between North Centennial Street and North College Drive, which covers about a three block radius.

HPU plans to use the closure to build a pharmacy school. Hollis said members talked about the benefits this move would bring by adding jobs and more students to the area.

However, not everyone thinks the closure is a good idea.

Hollis said council members heard residents in the area's concerns the night before. Residents expressed their thoughts about how traffic patterns would be effected, especially routes for emergency vehicles.

City council members also approved the contract with WatchGuard for the purchase of in-car cameras for police cars.
